Dubrovnik

Sailing Croatia!

Like heaven on Earth with its rich architectural heritage, stone palaces and medieval monasteries, Dubrovnik has once again become a holiday destination as well as UNESCO World Heritage Site.

Dubrovnik! Restaurants, bars, and port. The old town is UNESCO Cultural Heritage

Take the chance and visit the island of Mljet, not far from Dubrovnik. A third of its territory is protected as a national park and is an extraordinary place to find peace and tranquility. Its beauty attracts hikers, divers, bike-tourists, and lovers of quietness and nature. Also, if you can go visit Lastovo island. Life is to short to miss out on the wide range of experience it has to offer. There are plenty of free activities awaiting and Croatia will certainly provide you with the funniest and live life to the full. It’s not always easy to keep track of what’s possible around the world and probably better to keep it simple because we can miss out on things and either run out of time if not well planned due to lack of time to research. Croatia has more than 1000 islands, plenty of ferries allow you a great holiday. In Hvar, I found great luxury sailing opportunities, amazing cozy restaurants, and terraces, nightlife up on the hill! Get ready to walk up and down but I assure great fun! In Split, there is the Festival Ultra-Europe in Summertime. I did enjoy and plan to spend holiday around Croatia and the neighbor countries are also on the list to re-visit. If you’re in Italy is easy to get to the port in Ancona coming from Rome. Italians usually are in good mood on their holiday and you’ll meet good people and laugh all the way. From Portugal is still not the easiest country to reach but is possible with Ryanair and it’s worth the way. As soon as possible I’ll update the blog with some alternatives. You’ll find introverted but beautiful and generous people in Croatia.

UNESCO Cultural and Natural Heritage Sites in Croatia:

1 Episcopal complex, Porec

2 The historic city of Trogir

3 The historic centre with Diocletian palace in Split

4 the old town of Dubrovnik.

There are several National Parks in Croatia such as Risnjak, Plitvice Lakes (scenic lakes linked by waterfalls), Paklenica, Kornati and Mljet already mentioned.

Nature and Blue Flag Global

The Hellenic Society for the Protection of Nature (HSPN) is the oldest national environmental NGO in Greece, founded in 1951, and strives continuously for the protection of Greek nature since. It is active along four axes: environmental intervention; nature conservation; environmental education; sustainable management and general public awareness raising.

It has established the “Byron Antipas” prize, which is awarded to an individual or organisation that has decisively contributed to the protection of Greek nature; among its recipients is the renowned environmentalist Luc Hoffmann (2005), and the Ecumenical Patriarch Bartholomew (2011).

It is a member of major international conservation organisations, such as the IUCN, and has been honoured for its work, it by the Academy of Athens, the Council of Europe and the Ford Foundation.

The Blue Flag Global deserves a long visit. For the coastal environment, water quality, safety and access for all: the Blue Flag represents a serious and profound commitment to both people and the environment.

There are not many tour operators but planning yourself is quite easy. Yes, it’s time-consuming but I rather decide where to go, when and where to stay. Greece needs tourists. Go and visit! If by chance you like to book hotels, resorts, or a B&B do it now.

Aegina, the island of light and artists

Offering clear bright light, significant archaeological monuments and wonderful nature, Aegina has always been a favourite place for Greek artists.

Ancient trails, cleared and signposted by the Aegina Active Citizens, enable trekkers to explore the island. The culture paths include a route that goes around Mt Ellenton; a trail from Stefentouri to Eleonas; a walking route in Ancient Eleonas that runs from Marathonas Beach to Pachia Rachi; and a trail from Pachia Rachi to the Panagia from Chrysoleontissas Monastery.

Nobody leaves Aegina without pistachios, a protected designation of origin (PDO) – status product rated as one of the world’s best in its category. Pottery has flourished on Aegina for approximately 3,000 years. Renowned ceramic artist Theodora Horafa and visual artist Katerina Giannaca live and work on the island.

Uros Islands

Made of dried Totora reeds, the artificial islands of the Uros are Lake Titicaca’s top tourist attraction. The lives of the Uros, a pre-Incan people, are interwoven with these reeds, which is a primary source of food and are also used to make their homes, their boats and even a reeds flower tea. Reeds are added to the top of the islands constantly, about every three months, as they rot from the bottom, so the ground is always soft and springy.

Madeira “The Pearl of the Atlantic”

Madeira and Porto Santo

Right in the middle of the Atlantic, the islands of Madeira and Porto Santo are a heaven of natural beauty. The exotic colours of the flowers stand out from among the blue sea and the emerald green vegetation; this is an archipelago where two-thirds are a protected area and where the largest Laurisilva forest in the world is located.

Sports, events and all about Madeira!

The Levadas of Madeira

One of the best-known “Levadas” starts at Ribeiro Frio. A “Levada” is an irrigation channel or aqueduct specific to the Portuguese island of Madeira. The “Levada das 25 Fontes” leads from Rabaçal to the foot of the cliff with several springs cascades into it but there are many walking trails along the maintenance path. Madeira and Porto Santo are also well known for water sports and paragliding.

Some out of many interesting touristic places are: Monte, Curral das Freiras, Pico do Areeiro, Cabo Girão, Ribeira Brava, Paul da Serra, Sta. Maria Madalena, Camacha…The Archipelago of Madeira consists in the islands of Madeira, Porto Santo, Desertas and Selvagens.

Porto Moniz, Madeiran Island is one of my favourite places.
Porto Moniz, Madeiran Island is one of my favourite places.

Having been colonized on behalf of the Infante D. Henrique, it was harbour of departure for Christopher Columbus (Cristóvão Colombo) on his discovery of the “New World”. Its rare and natural beauty has volcanic origins. Its several mountains can reach heights up to 1.850 m. Also due to its climate, it is a place suitable for the growing of fruits and flowers, some of them being very famous because of its quality. In conclusion, Madeira and Porto Santo are fantastic places to relax, far away from the city stress. Don’t miss “Câmara de Lobos” where Cristiano Ronaldo grew up which is a small and very particular village with great “tascas” and enjoy the best “Poncha” cocktail in Madeira.

cabo-girao
Cabo Girão – as good as in China

Portugal ranks as one of the best destination worldwide and Madeira Archipelago worths a week minimum. To get there I recommend TAP Airways and Easyjet. Transavia also does Madeira. To Porto Santo island go by ferry with Lobo Marinho or by plane from Funchal or directly from Lisbon and Porto. When to go? Every single day of the year seems to be a good time, however, there is no ferry in January. Where to stay? Funchal has more than 1000 hotels from Luxury like Reid’s and The Cliff Bay to hostels. I lived in both islands and as a tourist, I recommend them both.

Secret destinations – Siberia

Siberian tourism and travel events.

The North Express and the Audacious Trans-Siberian Express

In remote Russia, the Tsar had come to the conclusion that more comfort was needed on the best train linking Kiev with Odessa, and as early as 1864 the service began offering primitive bed carriages with armchairs in which passengers could lie down.

In February 1882, Nagelmackers sent the Count de Chazelles to negotiate with the Russians. This resulted in an agreement permitting Wagons-Lits vehicles t run over the Russian State Railways from the Wirballen (the German frontier station).

Thus, in 1884 Nagelmackers Nord-Sud Express was born. It would run in one train station from St. Petersburg to his hometown, Liège.

The first Russian-built Wagons-Lits (in 1887 Nos. 211-215 for St. Peterburg-Warsaw) came from the Russian-Baltic Wagon works at Riga, which together with the Upper Volga wagon works at Twer, supplied some 50 vehicles, mostly sleepers with some diners, to CIWL.

In the 1930s, the Soviet Union once again opened the trans-Siberian to foreigners, the classes of travel being hard, soft and international.

Two through sleeping-car services join Moscow with Peking, one through Mongolia past Ulan Bator-the capital-over a new line. This reduces the distance to 7,865 kilometers instead of 9,001 kilometers by the old route via Harbin (Pinkiang), still followed by the second service).

The best of Siberia!

The best way to discover Siberia is certainly across the Trans-Siberian Railway

The Russian Trains - Siberian Experience

The Russian Trains – Siberian Experience

The Russian train experience

The Trans-Siberian Railway has many routes; however, the main one is that which starts in Moscow and goes east to Vladivostok. The Trans-Siberian splits off into a few other interesting directions as well. In 1891, approval was given to begin construction of this railway across Siberia, linking Moscow to the Pacific. The route was divided into six sections for construction. If you wish to sandwich your trip with stays in Moscow and Beijing, both of which offer a feast of history and culture.

Lake Baikal

Because it is situated in a pretty remote location in Siberia, Lake Baikal is not frequented by many tourists. Get a window seat as the train loops around the lake – the deepest and oldest lake in the world.

However, there are some places where you could stay and visit the surroundings of the lake.

By far the most popular destination for tourists is the village of Listvyanka. It is located less than 2 hours away from Irkutsk, a city which is served by international airlines.

Lake Baikal Fauna & Flora

Lake Baikal formed 25 million years ago, provides a haven for 1,200 animal species, 600 types of plants, and the world’s only freshwater seals.

Mongolia
Kazakh Eager Hunter, Mongolia

Of these plants and animals, 75 percent are found only in the Lake Baikal region, making its preservation crucial.

Street Parties, Samba Parades, and Flashy Carnival Balls

The Africans have subsequently influenced the Carnival with the introduction of samba music in 1917. Samba is now considered as traditional Brazilian music, and you can experience its rhythm at the Rio Carnival 2018.

Almost all the music played during Rio Carnival is samba. It is a uniquely Brazilian music originating from Rio, a dance form that was invented by the poor Afro-Brazilians.

The word Carnival originates from the Portuguese ‘Carne Vale’, interpreted as ‘Farewell to meat’.

The phrase refers to the Carnival as being the ultimate celebration before a period of abstinence from alcohol, meat and pleasure begin. This period lasts up to the Easter holiday, the date when Jesus Christ rose from the dead.

Here, you can book and get a download a free guide with all about 2018 Rio Carnival events, venues, Rio Carnival’s history, 2018 Rio Carnival tickets, costumes for the 2017 Samba Parade and “Sambódromo” information, accomplished with insiders’ recommendations.

April: International Istanbul Film Festival, Istanbul Tulip Festival

June: Istanbul Music Festival July: Efes Pilsen One Love, Istanbul Jazz Festival

September: Istanbul Biennial, Efes Pilsen Blues Festival

October: Akbank Jazz Festival and Istanbul Design Biennial

Istanbul is perfect for a family-friendly break

children will be appeased by the fantastic Baklava, Lokum ( Turkish delight) and Dondorma (ice cream), the castles, the underground cisterns, and parks. Toddlers and bigger kids love ferries, and Istanbul offers loads of chances to climb aboard. The Princes’ Island is a good offer as the kids love taking a horse-drawn carriage and can also hire bicycles to get around. The city’s contemporary art gallery has several exhibits which include multimedia and teens will amuse and engage.

Top 8 attractions as a local

Markets -street vendors such as in Kadikoy, selling fruit and vegetables. Most neighborhoods have a produce market where the stallholders hawk farmhouse cheese, olives, and fish.

The Grand Bazaar, my favorite place in Istanbul. Safe as everywhere else. And the kindness of people is unbelievable!

Be aware of the rules when you visit the mosques. Even though very touristic, the primary function is a religious one so avoid visiting on prayer times. The Ottoman mosques are jewels in the city’s crown.

Picnicking and promenading are some of the local’s favorite pastimes and there are many parks and gardens free to the public. Enjoy the Hippodrome in Sultanahmet, the Yildiz Park and the Emirgan Woodson the Bosphorus!

The sunset over the world’s most beautiful skyline, the fortune to see it in between two continents.

Wander the streets surrounding of the Galata Tower, while enjoying an aperitif and admiring the boutiques. The Old City is unique.

The Salt Galata, the 19th-century building has been converted into a cutting-edge cultural centre.

Experience the ethnic enclaves by visiting Fener, a traditionally Greek suburb that has at its heart the symbolic headquarters of the Greek Orthodox church.

Babylon is an Istanbul institution with a diverse program of live music and Salon an intimate venue in the headquarters of the Istanbul Foundation for Culture & Arts.

Topping the seven hills of the Old City is not necessarily a lifetime journey. In every corner, a fantastic cultural experience lies and Istanbul invites you to come back! This magical meeting place of East and West is made of beautiful people, very kind and friendly. The details in the way they are in hospitality and the culinary heritage are extraordinary. The restaurants in Istanbul are known as the best in the country and they are all over. However, most visitors prefer to sample the succulent kebabs or the freshly caught fish and that are the city’s signature dishes. As far as we know, Turkey is on the world best destinations rank along Mexico and France and if you’re trying to guess why we invite you to get the tickets and find out by yourself! Tips while in Istanbul: try Turkish coffee and the Turkish bath. And be prepared to drink tea all over the day. Do not worry, there are plenty of takeaway, ATM, ferries, buses, and nobody misses home. Oh, Turkish people speak English pretty well but they can be a bit shy. Hopefully, not for too long! Great people make great destinations.

I want to say THANK YOU to the Turkish people! Your hospitality is the reason why you’re at the top of the world tourism ranking and I’m very grateful to you!

Go, visit, explore Turkey. I’m are sure that you won’t regret!
